Searching for an affordable compact car? With similar starting prices, the 2022 Toyota Corolla and the 2022 Nissan Sentra are natural choices that might make your shortlist. They both offer technology, some of the latest driver assistance features, and a capable engine. But which one will give you a more modern experience and a comfortable commute?
The Toyota Corolla offers buyers two engine options. The base engine is available on the L, LE, and XLE trims and is a 139- horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. The SE and XSE have a more powerful engine –169-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Both options have a continuously variable transmission, front-wheel drive, and are sufficient for navigating city streets.
The Nissan Sentra only has one engine option, a 149-horsepower four-cylinder engine that is also mated to a continuously variable transmission. Although it has a bit more power than the Corolla’s base engine the Sentra struggles at highway speeds.
Both cars offer seating for five people. The Corolla Sedan is comfortably roomy, but taller passengers may suffer in the Sentra’s rear seat.
The Corolla Sedan offers 13.1 cubic feet of trunk space and the rear seats can be lowered for additional space. The Sentra offers a bit more trunk space (14.3 cubic feet), but owners who need to utilize additional space to haul a large item may find it difficult because the rear seats are not even with the trunk floor when folded.
Car buyers who know they will commonly need more cargo room can opt for the Corolla Hatchback which offers 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space. The Sentra does not offer a hatchback option.
The 2022 Toyota Corolla has a tablet-like infotainment system with an easy-to-reach, intuitive touchscreen display. The Sentra has a 7-inch touchscreen display that doesn’t offer as many standard features as the Corolla.
