The Toyota Prius was completely redesigned for the 2023 model year, which also kicks off the fifth generation. You’ll find updates to the interior and exterior of the Prius; for example, every Prius model now rides on Toyota’s TNGA-C platform. This update makes the Prius leaner but more eco-friendly, and it also receives a wider stance and lower driving position. The powertrain also gets an updated hybrid engine with 194 horsepower and is available with all-wheel drive.
The Hyundai Elantra Hybrid sees minor changes to the 2023 model, including doing away with the manual transmission available for the N Line trim. The Convenience Package, available on the SEL and N Line models, now has a 10.3-inch infotainment display and a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The SEL Premium package was also discontinued.
The Toyota Prius has two powertrain options. The base engine standard with the front-wheel drive is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor to generate 194 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. The available engine, which is standard with all-wheel drive, is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that is combined with two electric motors to produce 196 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come with a continuously variable automatic transmission.
The Hyundai Elantra Hybrid only has one engine option, which is a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor that creates a combined 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque and is paired with front-wheel drive and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The Toyota Prius has an above-average cargo area with a maximum of 23.8 cubic feet of space in the LE trim and 20.3 cubic feet of space in the XLE and Limited trims. The interior also comes standard with manually adjustable front seats, but synthetic leather, heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat is available.
The Hyundai Elantra Hybrid doesn’t offer as much cargo space as the Prius. It only has 14.2 cubic feet of space, but it does come with a hands-free power trunk lid.
Both the Toyota Prius and the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid can seat up to five passengers, and both come standard with cloth upholstery. Also, both hybrid vehicles come standard with an 8-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™.
The Prius also has more standard features than the Elantra Hybrid, such as rear-seat alert which is a reminder before you exit the vehicle that you have kids and pets in the back seat. The Prius also has features like traffic-sign recognition, lane-trace assist, adaptive cruise control, and rear-camera mirror that are not available on the Elantra Hybrid.
